Gabion

Asset Type : Engineered

Stormwater
Source Water Protection
Construction Rank : 2
O&M Rank : 2

How it Works : Gabions are wire frames that are typically filled with rocks and are used for erosion control and slope stabilization. They are built into slopes, usually steep slopes, to catch and retain soils. They can easily be vegetated.

O&M Required : Gabions should be inspected after major storms. Check for signs of undercutting, scour and instability. Check wire annually for rust or wear and replace when necessary.

Design Considerations : A gabion must be professionally designed and consider sliding, overturning and settlement. Gabion's can be installed on slopes as well as under water. It is important to keep the bottom of the gabion level. Make sure larger stones are lining the wires and if there are smaller stones make sure they are in the center.

Costs : Inexpensive compared to rigid structures and retaining walls.

Benefits : They help stabilize slopes and prevent erosion. Unlike concrete structures, gabions can settle and flex under various environmental conditions. They can easily be fitted and adapted around pipes and other structures. They can also be used on projects with difficult terrain. Skilled labor is not needed for construction and assembly.
